Centre sees ‘immense potential’ for wind power in Ladakh

The Central government has identified Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar islands and the North-East as possible locations to expand wind power generation facilities.

Speaking at Wind India Power Conclave, organised by CII, Bhanu Pratap Yadav, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said: “Ladakh has immense potential for wind power generation facilities. We are also looking at Andaman and Nicobar islands and the North-East for expanding the footprint of wind power generation.”

Gujarat has the second-largest wind power generation capacity, after Tamil Nadu. Gujarat’s total wind capacity is 6,044 MW, while its total power generation capacity is 31,382 MW at 2018-end. Tamil Nadu has the highest wind power generation capacity at 8,631 MW.

Yadav said the Ministry will be coming up with a revised wind energy potential in the country. It will take into account larger turbines and will significantly boost the generation potential. Commenting on the turmoil that the sector is facing, Yadav said the Ministry is working to resolve the impending issues. “We are working to plug the gaps in power purchase agreements that the industry has red-flagged,” he added.
